County champions experience a journey, not a season

So often when we lose out in the championship and out season is over, we can write the season off as a waste, we didn’t get anything out of it.

No silverware = no success, isn’t that the usual way?

However, watching the club championship action over the past couple of weekends, reaffirmed to me that again that doesn’t have to be the attitude.

And if you can flip that attitude, you can get the set yourself up for the success.

It was interesting to hear the number of teams that won titles over the past couple of weeks, talking about knocking at the door, the past couple of seasons.

Getting beat in championship quarter finals, semi-finals and finals themselves over the past number of seasons:

  • Magherafelt won a Derry championship this year after losing last years final

  • Salthill-Knocknacarra won the Galway championship after losing last years final

  • Nemo Rangers won a Cork title after 3 final defeats in a row

These are tough positions to find yourself. But it does show that those losses were not necessarily the end of the road.

They didn’t not equate to failure. They were the building block for the success these teams are experiencing now. These teams and players seen these as part of the journey. Seasons ending earlier than they expected. Heart-breaking losses. Losses to the same team. I am sure these were all hard to take, but all opportunities to learn. All experiences that contribute to their own unique journey.

I’d say if you spoke to them, they wouldn’t have got to the Monday Clubs they enjoyed without those hard lessons.

It isn’t season to season.

Whether this season was successful or this season was unsuccessful, they are not separate. These seasons are all interconnected, they all feed into the longer journey. So if you have found yourself in that boat this season as a team or an individual, know that while it is tough, learn from it, no matter how difficult it is. Use it to come back and continue the journey and see where it can take you.
